Twelve-year old Mya Gaines wishes there was a school for bravery.
Challenged by bullies, her teachers, parents and friends, because she’s different, Mya finds answers in The Garden of Yin Yang.
The shadow character of Thorne tries to stop Mya from becoming the heroine of her dreams. Battling inner and outer demons, Mya learns to speak up, accept the differences in herself and others and find a sense of belonging and self worth.
In Mya’s words:
“I hope you like my blogs and if you answer them I’ll learn what’s important to you. Have you ever dreamed about being a hero or heroine? Have you ever been bullied? Do you know there are different kinds of bullies?
I’m twelve years old and I live on Mountain Lake in Tall Pines, NY. It’s the coolest community, but I’d like to build one with you. It doesn’t matter what age you are. I’ve met some really cool adults. Do you know that adults get bullied, too?
My favorite color’s sunflower yellow and someday I’d like a car that color. What’s your favorite color?
The heroes and heroines I like best are Rosa Parks, Joan of Arc, Nelson Mandela and Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo was an awesome Mexican artist who was in lots of pain, but she kept painting because she loved art.
I want to be an artist, too and draw everything in nature. That’s why I love to go into my special forest, which has a zillion things to draw, but don’t tell my parents I go there alone or I’ll get a time-out for the rest of my life.
When I’m not drawing or dreaming, I like Maroon 5 and Lady Gaga and reading books by Roald Dahl. My favorite story’s “The BFG” and since I just met a giant, I love “The BFG” even more. (You’ll find out more about what happened to me when you read ‘The Garden of Yin Yang’, which is almost finished.)
So let’s share. I can always use more BFF’s. Can you?
